How to Maximize an Article Using Keywords

Norman W Wilson, PhD

Keywording, sometimes called Controlled Vocabulary, has generally been applied to photos and images. Now it also applies to written articles to be published on the internet. WebCrawlers look for these keywords as part of the SEO (Search Engine Optimization) process.

Put simply, keywording is a way for a writer to gain greater exposure for his or her articles; to increase name recognition and readership. And that is what you want to do if you are trying to establish yourself as a writer or an expert in a particular field.

Among the important considerations are the following:

Don’t be repetitious in keyword choice. Remember variety is the spice of life,

Don’t overload your article with keywords,

Use related versions of your keywords. If your article is about snowboarding consider keywords such as types of snowboards, top 5 snowboarding locations, caring for a snowboard. People surfing the web may punch in any of these and would then be directed to articles dealing with the subject,

Your keywords must relate to your article, and

Use keywords in your article’s title.

Be sure your article title is at least three words long. Four or five words would be better. Articles of a, an, and the do not count as keywords in a title.

The name of the game is recognition. By changing the keywords throughout your article you can submit it to several sites. Changing the keywords varies the focus without the necessity of rewriting the article.

Help in selecting keywords is available at several sites.
